Moisture on the windows can persistently form on the windows during certain times of the year and for some people, may be a cause for concern. What Causes Window Condensation?
Condensation forms when moisture in the air meets a surface with a lower temperature. A common example would be the droplets that form on the surface of a cold glass of water. The moisture on the surface isn’t coming from the contents of the glass; it’s from the air that surrounds it. Another would be eyeglasses that become fogged up after coming out of a cold room. On windows, condensation forms when one side of the glass is cooled down. The higher the humidity level is on the other side of the glass, the more pronounced the condensation will be.
Should You Be Worried About Window Condensation?
Your roof replacement contractor may have warned you about condensation in your home. In places like the attic, condensation can indicate major roofing problems. While condensation on windows is generally not a bad thing, it’s important to note the side of the window that has condensation on it.
Exterior. The exterior side of the windows may appear to be sweating during the summer season. This is due to the window glass being cooled by the air conditioner and the high outdoor humidity levels that are typical of the season.
Interior. The reverse is true during the winter season when the glass is cooled from the outside. Unlike outdoor humidity, relative indoor humidity can be controlled by adjusting (or turning off) your humidifier.
You will notice that condensation is not a problem in either case. Rather, they are indicative of good, working window seals. However, there is one condition that may indicate a problem with your windows. If your windows are equipped with insulated glass (double or triple-pane glass) and condensation is forming between the glass panes, it means moisture has penetrated the glass seals. You may also feel drafts around the same windows. If this is the case, your windows will need to be serviced if not replaced.
