Why Do Asphalt Shingles Blister?

Among the most common reasons to seek roof repair is when blisters form on your asphalt shingles. These are known to appear on any kind of roof but are more likely to show on membranes. This may be due to the gaps between membrane plies or between the underlayment and the membrane.

If you have been worrying about this matter, we’ll talk you through its causes and the simple ways you can easily get rid of them.

Common Causes of Roof Blisters

The common causes of roof blisters include moisture, insufficient ventilation, and faulty installation. It can be noted that improper installation work can leave small empty spaces in your roof that may contain pockets of moisture. As the sun heats up the shingles, pressure in these pockets starts to rise and elevate the surface. This results in blisters. For some instances, blisters can form on an extremely hot roof surface. Hence, poorly ventilated roofs are prone to this particular problem.

Blisters are raised areas where there is a lack of adhesion of the roof. They usually contain trapped moisture or air and look like bubbles on your roof. Once ignored, they can become bigger, letting more moisture penetrate the membrane, leading to costly repairs and replacement.

Addressing and Preventing Blisters

Experts note that the threat posed by blisters depends on how many they actually are. Normally, the roof membrane can handle small movements and would be able to withstand a few blisters. However, should there are more than a few on your roof, you can immediately call for contractors to check whether a roof replacement is necessary.

Moreover, the best way to avoid this problem is to make sure your roof is installed correctly. Only hire a reputable and trained professional for your project. Make certain to have your roof regularly maintained as well.
