How to Handle a Hard-Sell

It’s not uncommon for a contractor to mention one or two other services or products you didn’t originally consider. It’s called upselling and it’s a fact of commerce. From roof replacement to plumbing, all contractors may, at some point, at least tell you about an add-on. How can you tell if the upsell is worth your time and, perhaps, money?

The first thing you should consider is whether you trust the contractor. The most professional ones would never hard-sell you on anything and they will aim to educate you first, rather than simply try to sell something you could do without.

But how do you handle an upsell or a hard-sell? Here are some pro tips.

Don’t Say Yes Just Yet

Find out if the problem you’re trying to address does need the solution being sold to you. Have the contractor show you. If they are truly trustworthy, they will show you even if you don’t ask and only mention the additional solutions after. For example, during a routine roof repair, if the contractor finds a bigger problem while inspecting your attic, have them show you how the solution they’re proposing will solve the problem.

Do Your Research

Instead of saying yes, especially if you haven’t decided if you completely trust the contractor, do more research on your own.

Ask for Estimates

Get a few quotes from different contractors. A professional won’t mind if you don’t say yes yet. They will probably suggest you ask around first.

Ask Questions

Ask as many questions as you believe matter in the situation, until you are satisfied with the answers.

Don’t Hesitate to Say No

If you think what they’re selling is not important, or if it’s too expensive, don’t forget that it’s your home, so don’t be afraid to say no.

Don’t Let Them Scare You

If the contractor uses scare tactics to get you to sign up for a service, that’s a big red flag that you should simply say no and look for a new contractor.
