In some regions, fiberglass or asphalt shingles are also referred to as composition shingles because they consist of various raw materials.
Asphalt Shingles Have Asbestos
Asphalt shingle manufacturers have done away with asbestos for decades. In the past, manufacturers did use asbestos to make asphalt shingles fire-resistant. But today, they utilize inert mineral stabilizers for this purpose.
Shingles Lose All Their Granules After Installation
The granules give the shingles their color and solar reflectivity. They are also vital in reducing your roof’s UV absorption. Over time, these granules loosen due to age or severe weather events. But if they come off in significant amounts after your roof’s installation, contact your roofer immediately. While it’s normal for shingles to shed the excess shingles after their installation, this shouldn’t cause your roof to develop bald patches.
You Can Install New Shingles Over Old Shingles
Roofing manufacturers don’t recommend installing new shingles over old roofing materials because this will compromise the quality and performance of your new roof. As a general rule, make sure your contractor tears off the old shingles and replaces all other damaged roofing components.
